The Visit

What Happens During a Visit?

Prior to the visit, the birthing mother will be added to an electronic health record system where there will be a consent form and a new patient packet to complete. Based on the information received, the visit will be tailored towards the mom and baby’s needs. We will cover some breastfeeding basics, assess the current breastfeeding relationship, and help with positioning, latching, supply issues, and/or pumping questions. Remember, that not every visit looks the same, and not all areas may be covered if they are not deemed necessary. See some examples below.

Passion in all we do.

Weight Check/Weighted Feed

Based on the reason for the visit, a weight check or weighted feed may be performed. A weighted feed starts with the baby in a clean diaper. We will weigh the baby, then the mom will breastfeed, and we will take another weight after the feed. Then, by doing some simple calculations, we can tell exactly how much breastmilk the baby was able to transfer.

Oral Exam

Again, based on reasons for the appointment, an oral exam may be performed. This will be a basic check of the baby’s oral anatomy and suck strength.

Question Time

Many parents have a list of questions and we will go through all of them together. I will provide answers, handouts, and videos, as they are necessary.
